No, you can call up the PS3 menu with the remote.

(For the record, by "PS3 menu" I mean that little translucent, 3-line popup that has controls like FF, Subtitles, Skip forward, etc...)
Essentially the dongle works as a PS3 controller. It supports all the buttons the regular controller controls, and no more. Anything you can do with the controller you can do with the remote. The controller though doesn't have the color-coded buttons, only the bluetooth BluRay remote has those. Thus you need to hit the menu button on your remote and choose the color-coded button option if you want to use a color-coded button. (Which, honestly, you really almost never need to use.)
