Greenies have been taken for decades. Willie Mays has talked about taking them in the 50's and 60's.

he's not the only name, just one of the most prominent (Aaron and Mantle are the only 2 names on par with him in that era).
Baseball's just taking it seriously now; whereas it was a running joke for decades.
