I think it spoke to the personality of the character. He felt negativity, but dealt with it via his humor and self-deprecation.

And when things were awful, he would work, and do what he could do with what materials he had at hand, rather than dithering on second-guessing (which from what I've seen is pretty accurate for astronauts).
