I've brushed up against it a couple times and each time I've come away thinking it's people looking for a reason to get offended.

I know some female game developer got fucked over and that some some grander "is 'Gamer' even still a relevant classification" debate is involved, and that people are wildly upset over it, but I've never seen a coherent connection between the two or why anybody should actually care.
