spoileryish for first ep (I didn't make it to the second one yet):

it seems clear that the repeated main-character deaths are part of an ongoing story line that's subplot, and they're sometimes used as part of the crime-solving; but they are not relied on at all for story tension, except sometimes there's risk that someone new might find out his secret.

in and of themselves, there's no "they can't kill him off, can they?" at all; and I'd guess they'll save that for the end of the show. it's actually kind of freeing and saves the need for silly suspension of disbelief for when it happens periodically on shows like "Castle." (there's no "Castle" without Castle, duh.)
