It's the rigidity of the domain name and hosting requirements that are the deterrent ...

Points:
- would have to buy certificates for each domain (slackertalk.com, www.slackertalk.com, slickertalk.com, www.slickertalk.com, hsxtt.com, www.hsxtt.com, beta.slackertalk.com)
- not all browsers support virtual hosted SSL certificates
- maximum compatibility could mean a separate $5/mo server for each domain
- slightly more complex maintenance (but I can deal with that)
