nolo press has a book on it, some states will let you change your name just by showing some proof you use that name...

my ex in CA did it twice (you have to wait a few years before doing it again.)
but she got a DL and her passport had her birth name and AKA prefered name and they told her that if she renewed her passport with the same name they'd put only her chosen name.
in most states now, if you show your marriage certificate you can change to either name,
it used to be a hassle for the guy to take her name, like huh what? and you'd have to do the court petition or aka routine, now you can use either name or make up a new one for the new family
