They think everywhere in America is reachable in a day's drive in a car.

They think we're not well traveled when they can drive to three or more countries in Europe in a day. For us to see Europe we have to sell all of our belongings to afford the trip across the ocean. Only some of us can drive to Canada or Mexico and most of the parts of Canada we want to see are on either coast.
