In response to "I think the rate for the comment jar needs to be raised for Ebola stories." by loosi at work

I self-banned from an entire site the other night because of a comment section. "thought catalog"

I first saw it, that I remember anyway, when that cringe-inducing "first date ideas" list was linked here; and, that night, I remembered to go check another list (tips for guys about sex - my viewing was, a little shamefully, a trainwreck thing).

it was just as awful a list (same writer); but, worse than that was that it was obvious to me that there was a killer amount of astroturfing in the comments, by the writer and maybe friends or relatives of hers or something; and then there was a bunch on the other side (possibly from the same people). I clicked on a bunch of profiles, and most of them were apparently created just to comment on the story.

it'd be bad enough if the comments and hits were just to make the writer more money or the like; but the content of them was mostly pretty darned hateful.

that all throws under YouTube, which I didn't know was possible for a non-obviously-slanted site.

I subsequently saw this story - the site has a lot to answer for, ugh.
