I think the point was supposed to be that the story didn't make any sense, but the FBI didn't want to investigate a media darling. She was viewed as a victim by the media and viewers, so the FBI wasn't going to risk looking bad to chase down inconsistencies.

Outside that, I do wonder why the couple who store her 100 grand didn't figure out it was her afterward, and at least blackmail her again. I know they were hicks were they were smart enough to see she didn't wear glasses, and was hiding things. They had to at least suspect she was Amy.
