In response to "I've only flown through Narita but is it only the US restricted out of there?" by spamlet

Slot at HND are heavily restricted in general, but the US has the worst time slot restrictions AFAIK.

Basically flights from the US can only land between 10pm and 6am and can only depart between midnight and 6am. Europe flights, for example, are not subject to this (BA's LHR flight arrives at 7:20am and leaves at 8:50am. JAL and ANA's LHR flights arrive around 3pm)

When HND was first opened up to the US flights, there were only four slots available to US carriers, with the DOT originally awarding the slots to AA (JFK), DL (LAX), DL (DTW), and Hawaiin (HNL). AA had applied for both JFK and LAX but DOT chose DL for that.

Both JFK (AA) and DTW (DL) were utter flops, in part due the impossible timings from the eastern portions of the US to make those dreadful HND times work.

Delta got permission to move their Detroit flight to Seattle (they've build a small hub in Seattle the past couple of years).

AA just flat out quit losing money on JFK-HND and stopped service. UA applied (and got) the slot and launched SFO-HND (which JAL already operated)

Now DL can't make Seattle work, at least not year round. but they are flying the flight for basically a week in the middle of a six month dormancy in order to not have to give it up.
