one of my nieces and her husband have a dog with similar issues, blind-eating included.
he can't be left alone much at all, even after~2 years of working with him. he'll stay with family if the couple needs to do something together. (that was one thing when my niece was home a lot; but I'm not sure what they're doing right now, actually, as she just started nursing school and everyone else works - doggie daycare, I'd guess.)
their dog was found by the side of a road and had clearly been abused/neglected. he's a great dog, aside from his emotional issues. :/
