this is mostly standard people-don't-know-how-to-quantify-risk stuff. the day-to-day threat of flu gets kicked to the side even though the mortality associated with it is well documented and fairly common. but people keep themselves up at night wringing their hands over a rare tropical pathogen whose path they are unlikely to ever cross...
