I considered that she might have spoken for herself without consulting him. Sorta her way of publicly telling him 'no'.

I'm a bit doubtful on that front, but it's definitely a possibility. That said, he can still back away from that and run.
(I mean, hell, Hilary wasn't running in 2008, no way, no how, I'm serving my Senate term, etc, etc)
