that they're telling this story to the police about somebody's death (I'm guessing her husband) and I think we're supposed to sort of draw our own conclusions about who is being honest and who isn't. But really, how should we know? We don't independently know them so there's no reason to believe one person's version versus another's or even know which parts of each might be the truth. They're just taking way too long to get to the payoff.
