It's been in the news lately. I don't know the particulars of Atkins, but an NIH-funded study reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month

favored low-carb over low-fat diets. Interestingly, I found this article that maintains the study actually compared a low-fat carbohydrate-restricted calorie-restricted diet, to a high-fat, carbohydrate restricted diet that *wasn't* caloried restricted, which as you can imagine makes a difference.
