Man of Steel could the DC version of what Marvel did with The Incredible Hulk.

Meaning, it was a reboot of a recent comic book film. That didn't hurt Marvel because they followed it up with Iron Man, but if you had looked at Marvel's plan right after The Incredible Hulk's release, you might not have been confident in The Plan.
Marvel found lightning in a bottle with RDJ as Iron Man. That basically means DC would have to find the same in either Ben Affleck, Jason Mamou, Gal Gadot, or Ray Fisher.
Another key could be people loving Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. I don't think any of those things are likely, but some perspective seems to be lost here.
