Breaking Down Gotham’s Premiere Numbers

The new Fox / WBTV series Gotham is a great way to look at the changing landscape of television. Fox has already given the series a full season commitment and it’s debut was impressive pulling in 8.3 million viewers on September 22nd. But Fox has come out now and said that 22.2 million people have watched the show. That’s 168% above the initial numbers… so where does that all come from.
We know that 8.3 million came from the Live +SD viewers which was the highest debut for a Fox series since 2000. Then you add in the folks that watched it within 3 days of airing, which is 3.9 million, another 1.8 million who watched it day 4 to 7 and then sprinkle in another 3.1 million who watched it through various encore presentations. That puts us at 17.1 million viewers.
Then you add in the folks who watched it through Video On Demand, which was 2.4 million and the folks who caught it on Hulu or FoxNOW which was 2.7 million and you end up with your 22.2 million viewers.
This is a great example of both how folks watch television is changing and the fact we need a better way to gauge ratings. When Manhattan Love Story was cancelled, all the stories prefaced how late into the season it was to get our first cancellation. But Gotham debuted over a month ago and we are just now seeing the real results. I think Hollywood has finally gotten it and are showing some patience… not something it’s known for.
