I don't know if anyone has done a study on that, but every team has to have a certain number of natural born citizens on their team.

Each team registers 25 players over 21 for their squad
Of those 25, 8 have to be home grown. 17 can be foreign.
However, a homegrown player is defined as a lpayer that spent 3 season between the ages of 16-21 in on an English team. (there are foreign players that fir this description)
