Less likely is viable third party manages to spring up.

The problem is you have people who are socially liberal but fiscally conservative. They don't like the Democrats on money (which really boils down to "taxes, boo!", which is misguided but whatever) and think the GOP is odious on social policy (gay rights, abortion, etc.). Someone will come up with an acceptable middle ground. But the money of the big two will be virtually impossible to overcome.
