Pest resistance in plants isn't the same as pest killing. A plant being a shade or two lighter or darker can be pest resistant, as can be a well fed, healthy one. One variety will taste different and be pest resistant. Or hairy instead of smooth. Thorns are also pest resistance.
Planting them next to something the bugs like to eat better also works, as does planting them next to something they don't like the color of.
