My sister had a Sears card before they spun off Discover.

She cancelled the Sears card and they sent her a Discover card. She cancelled that and was still getting stuff for both. She cancelled both several times. And had to fight to get confirmation numbers. It's been a few years and she thinks it's cancelled, but her name does crop up when I use my KMart Rewards card.
