my first dog and I went through a 7 week training at our local humane society - it was great - and not expensive at all

started with leash & heel training - and so on - once you learn it you can use it with every dog you ever own ... it's not really that complicated because they really do want to please you ... the key is repetitive daily training sessions to reinforce and "fix" the stuff in their growth period.
It does take some time - but it's totally worth it.
