In response to "I think it's important to go to dog training classes (both to train your dog and you). My in-laws sent their dog for training and I think there is " by pmb

This. It sounds like the PetSmart training they did was night and day different from our sessions. We never used a clicker

It was all repetition and reward. Start off rewarding even mildly successful attempts and slowly ween them from treats as their performance improves.

I'm very averse to shock collars and chain collars as those are *negative* reinforcement training aids. Better to go with positive reinforcement through treat rewards and praise.

All our dogs know the basics and would be a LOT better if we had reinforced a few things.

We have a fenced back yard so we never walk our dogs, so their on-lead pulling is still an issue.

But sit, stay, down and off are all pretty well established.
