Dear Mike
You have a choice so make it. Moaning about the flaws in our education system isn’t going to improve the situation in the short term and your son’s need for schooling is quite pressing. Much as it irks you, I feel you should get your son the best education you can. You’ll expect him to study hard, so just consider your churchgoing the effort you put in. Everyone may pay their taxes but I guess engaging with religion is the extra thing you must do in order to upgrade the primary school on offer. Approach it as being part of a community rather than having to believe a supernatural power created the planet in six days. Most of the stuff your son will pick up from the religious types is pretty good really. It’s just a set of stories retold to teach us good rules to live by — don’t kill anyone, try not to sleep with that woman next door and treat everyone in the way you expect to be treated. If they preach any intolerance or hatred, you can tackle that at home. I wonder if your real problem isn’t high-minded moral qualms but just good old-fashioned laziness. I suppose the bottom line is: what sort of dad would you like your son to be? When you’ve figured that out, act accordingly.
