so, who can tell me about external / portable hard drives? reliability, etc. . . .

with the troubles i'm having today w/ flash drives, i'm thinking that it's time i bit the bullet and get a portable HD somewhere. i'm guessing 500 gigs is more than I'll ever need? but hell, prices are reasonable enough . . . i was just looking at the electronics express website and they have 1 tera for under $100.

these things are reliable, right? and, i'm guessing, easy to access by plugging into a USB port on any desktop or laptop computer?

are there any particular brands that someone recommends?

i really need to do this, because, between my music, all of the things I've done in the past couple of years academically, my personal creative writing projects, and now the concerns over the academic journal pdf's that i'm trying to figure out if I've lost or not (I'm going to try the flash drive on a different computer just to make sure if the files are gone or if it's just a matter of hte computer being pissy as fuck and doesn't like the flash drive or something) . . . if I lose this stuff, my life is ruined.

i'm not being metaphorical here, folks. if i were to lose my files, i'm fucked. totally. completely. up the ass and set on fire with napalm. there are things that, while i could *eventually* replace them (the music MP3 files, for example), it would take for forever and a day to do that. and there are other files (like my writing, and most of the academic work) that would simply be gone. i don't know that I could even begin to replace that stuff by trying to reconstruct it all over the course of many years (there's that much stuff) . . .

sorry for all of the ranting and stuff here, folks. i'm just deciding that this is my wake-up call and that I need to do something to make sure I don't ever lose all of this stuff. in fact, i might eventually get a 2nd external hard drive to back up the first one . . .

suggestions?
