I'll say it might work against you if you're trying to be an upwardly mobile professional. On the other hand, it's probably healthy and means you're not a psycho.
I used to have this coworker, we were in the same department and close. She always took things to heart. If things didn't work out like they were supposed to, she would feel so bad. Both in work, and in life. Not for herself, but for whoever would have benefited. I would feel so bad seeing how bad she would feel. It was hard to watch. Maybe that's why someone would tell that to you. I'm sure she took some of those feelings home after work. But she was good at her job (tech support/customer service). I think you need people like that and you also need people who are more cold. It may have held her back, because people would often be afraid of saying the wrong thing in front of her.
She had lots of problems in her life, so considering, I hope she was able to deal with those feelings. Seemed like she did.
