academic / research paper question concerning bibliographies . . . if you read some materials but do not use them directly in the paper . . .

as in, you don't cite anything from the source, but you read it as part of doing the research, should it be included in the bibliography? i'm thinking yes, but not so sure. I don't want to pad the bibliography on a paper i'm working on if i don't have to . . . there's going to be plenty enough sources cited as it is.
