Here's a thought I had about Gotham ...

... imagine for a moment if the killing of the Waynes had gone differently. Let's say Martha survived, but Thomas did not. What would have happened?

Maybe Martha would have attempted to organize some justice of her own, perhaps going as far as creating an agency that could operate above the (flawed, corrupt) law to fix the problems in Gotham and beyond. She'd have the money to do it, after all. And even if she'd been the moral bellwether of the Wayne family, perhaps that would've been dashed in the shooting.

Then there's Bruce. He'd grow up in the shadow of his father's death. His mother might be absent or distant, consumed by the work of dealing justice extrajudicially. He'd still end up being raised by Alfred, but there would be an extra layer of abandonment to go with the anger he's always had.

Oh, Alfred. He wouldn't be able to control the boy. Martha might constantly undermine his authority, whenever a situation was escalated to her attention. He would be resented and abused by Bruce - what little will he had before the death of Thomas Wayne would be whittled down and maybe he would be tempted by drugs.

Gordon might be attracted enough to Martha that it could shatter his relationship with Barbara, but he wouldn't be able to leave the police department to join Martha's quest for vengeance. They would have to carry on at a distance, under constant threat of discovery, while appearing to be enemies to the outside world.

Selina Kyle might eventually become part of Martha's agency, quickly becoming a top operative.

Bruce would eventually join up as well, also becoming a top operative. His trademark might be the all-black clothing he wears on missions, and his bat-like Perfect Situational Awareness.

Martha's agency of vengeance would of course be named ...

ISIS.
