I think a lot of this comes from the general male tendency to be over confident in their crisis planning

They start with the phrase "Well, if *I* was being raped..." without realizing how monstrous and idiotic that sounds. It's the same tendency that leads people to think they'd know how to take down a rampaging gunman.
Also, he's probably seen Shawshank one too many times.
