how "academically professional" is it to draw on one's personal experiences when writing a paper? . . .

I know that some academic types do it occasionally as personal experience / support to points they're trying to make in their papers. I guess I just don't like necessarily doing 1st person stuff in my papers. but it's okay when appropriate to the topic, right?
