Ziva period.

When she first started they gave her a lot more to do. Now she has a few lines, says a few smartallecky things and then disappears.

But you're right, they need to explain more about her friend. It's like they are punishing casual watchers. I'm there every week but it would suck to not see it every week and not know the details.
