Generally I agree with you. I have felt from the beginning that Adnan is not innocent. Jay is obviously involved as an accessory at least.
I believe Jay's story as accurate. Adnan acted alone, Jay helped afterward. I think Jay may have "encouraged" Adnan, or even pushed him into action. Adnan's ultimate motive may have been to impress Jay, prove his "toughness", or because he was made to believe by the "criminal element of Woodlawn" that this is how you handle your business if you are a streetwise gangster.
As a witness/POI Jay's story was not credible, and the cops polished it up so as to be the strongest piece of evidence in a weak case. The state would not have had enough of a case to get a conviction if this didn't happen.
