I get that it's very "conspiracy theatre" or whatever, but it's super plausible. also, I do think that if sp

jay killed her, it was because she was threatening to tell stephanie he was seeing someone else. the prosecution likely could have sussed out who this was had they tried, but as we have said over and over again, they already had a guy they liked for the crime so why look at anyone else?
