One thing that always impressed me about Norman Bridwell was

naming the island Birdwell Island.

So he wants to name the island himself. OK, there's a touch of vanity in that, but that's not a big deal. But he realizes that "Bridwell" sounds funny and isn't easy for kids to say, and they'd probably just go ahead and call it "Birdwell" anyway, so that's what he names the island. Being able to take a step back and taking that common-sense approach always warmed me to him.

Poor Emily Elizabeth today. :(
