the source material is the modern basis for western mythology. The entire fantasy genre owes it's existence to Tolkien.
The LoTR movies are fascinating and incredibly well done.
The Hobbit movies are lesser products but I blame studio greed (and Jackson's lack of will to resist) and not artistic hubris (like with Lucas). I still seem glimmers of the source material even if they're mangled.
I have to think that greed will get the Similarion gets made. I hope whoever helms it respects the material.
