here's a secret: The elite private schools have vastly more money available to give grants to students.

My siblings and I all went to college together, we ALL went to private colleges, and the collective tuition far exceeded my dad's pretax salary. Financial need is determined for hte family. My dad figured out that if we ALL went to private expensive schoosl, we would get maximum financial aid, and we did. The private schools opened up their coffers and gave us all huge grants. over 50% of my tuition was given to me as a gift from the college.
