That telling sooner was undoubtedly complicated by

a) The other guy in this case is his best friend

As stated by a better songwriter than myself:

-I play along with the charade
-There doesn't seem to be a reason to change
-You know, I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
-I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is probably mute

b) Even he didn't have any link to the guy, he's still breaking up a couple. Some guys have an issue with such behavior

Also the way that scene is written (er, at least how I view it), he's not wondering what if. He walks away telling himself: "Enough...enough already". Or something like that. He know how it is, he has to figure out how he personally has to deal with it
