What? I thought we left them in New York in the 1940's or something. Was there an episode after that? Worse than the fate you described, they lost their newborn daughter. Never mind that they rediscovered River once she was grown. No matter how much Moffet would have us believe otherwise, this is not a happy ending. If your baby is taken from you and you are reunited with her 40 years later, that's a tragedy.
