In hindsight yes, but at the time there were few people complaining about the deal. The only question was whether they should have franchised him for

the year and with the way the offense had performed the prior year it was a legitimate concern that his price might go up if he repeated or improved on the year before (which didn't seem crazy at the time with everyone coming back and another year to get comfortable with the system). It's easy for us to criticize these decisions looking back, but based on the information at the time it wasn't crazy. It's why I would have kept Emery, though I can't defend his choice of Trestman. That was a stretch even at the time. Especially when Arians was available.
