Our patients are usually in the hospital for 4 days rather than 48 hours. She'll need a bit more help at home for the first several weeks.

It's abdominal surgery so there'll be some significant pain for the first several days and she'll be uncomfortable for a few weeks. On the other hand, the baby's head won't be malformed by the problem with her tailbone, she won't have a broken bone, if she's got a boney irregularity there's a good chance she'd have had to have an emergency c-section anyway--so why not control the situation and plan for it. Doing it this way, she probably won't have to have general anesthia, it'll be done with an epidural and the baby won't come out stunned. Also, she won't have to have a vacumn assist or forceps vaginal delivery which can result in some significant tears that are difficult to repair (I had a 3rd degree tear and 32 stitches along with some significant problems--I WISH my doctor hadn't held off on the C-section until it was too late and he had to literally pull her out), so all in all I think you ought to be grateful that you have a doctor who is on the ball and caught this before it became an emergency situation. :)
