Out of the blue question/observation: So for a while now every site with an account has a "Sign up with Facebook" option

What's the advantage of that vs. just creating your own account (today's example: Meetup)?

I imagine if I connect via Facebook, I will then have to make decisions over whether I want to spam you all with weird notifications. And Meetup isn't exactly selling me on why the option is even there. All they say about FB is an assurance that they won't post notifications without my permission. So, it's like "DO THIS THING... we promise all these bad things won't happen if you do..."

I don't mind connecting my Meetup account with something else to make it easier, but I'm not sure why it has to be FB. Do people do this?
