Sure, I have my predetermined list of cool things to do and great neighborhoods, etc. But then you find out 90 per cent of what you just told someone is irrelevant to their needs anyway. What's bad about that is, in the meantime the word gets out about something and it's no longer a bargain. That goes for great neighborhoods (see Silver Lake/Echo Park) as well as local hangs.
More broadly, I'll add that the sheer size of Los Angeles is an issue. Like credit default swaps, no one person knows about all of it. If a person seeking advice reveals no vital information, then that one guy who knows the area well won't know to chime in. :-)
