To borrow your example, surely you can see how always sending everyone to Topanga for hiking is bad.

There are plenty of places like that for hiking, but listing them all and their pros and cons is something nobody wants to do first thing. There are just too many. Same thing with clubs. Where will the person be staying? Will they have wheels? How much time do they have so they can drive farther to the really good stuff? These are things that we end up asking the person before getting into the nitty gritty.

All that said, I find myself linking people to this general list of LA attractions frequently. But good links like this are actually hard to come by (www.timeout.com)
