They thought Batista would be the big face and get cheered for winning the Rumble, but the crowd didn't respond and booed, so they turned him heel, had to shoehorn Daniel Bryan into the title match (since you can't have a heel vs heel main event) and then he left without getting the title 2 months before GotG came out.
