since I feel judgment (who knew, reading is bad - I won't mention non-amazon nabs ;p), a partial explanation, in addition to my having sleep issues and spending an unfortunate amount of my life waiting for other people:

there's a decent percentage that are parts of a whole -- it's an annoying thing, but it's a trend (one I hope goes away) for both independents and regular publishers. authors will release "books" (really just sets of chapters) that are 100-200 pages each. eventually some will come out as sets of 2 or 3 or more of them, so you just buy once; but there can be discounts to buy the parts as they come.
