Have you tried any of the Lincoln Lawyer books? They are fun, easy reads to start the year.

The Phrynne Fisher series is also fun.
If you ever want a *great* book set in rural Australia (it's spiritually similar to To Kill a Mockingbird), I highly recommend Jasper Jones.
