that is what it comes down to for most of us, it's just that there's something special in the mix for people

who have big public platforms - popular performers, twitter, etc. - and they know that's what people are seeing and hearing.
I kind of miss Oprah's regular show for that - she'd sometimes have some people on in the mix I'm thinking about. they'd show a different side of themselves, giving more context in a no-crudeness-allowed setting. (this may happen on other talk shows, but I don't think any of them have her ratings. oh maybe ellen? but she's more about the fun, I think.)
in recent years, I've thought about the impact of some popular YouTubers on kids - there's just so much more, and so easily accessible, than there used to be. (not just crude stuff but things like younger girls showing all the things they buy, never talking about budgets or savings - so unrealistic for most viewers. I wonder how credit card debt may be impacted in the years to come.)
