That's not unusual behavior in cats. Just avoid the brushing and learn the behavioral cues that indicate agitation

There was no warning. Went from liking it to drawing blood in one second. Matted fur got snagged, I guess.

Nailclipping is almost always why I get bitten or scratched by the cats.

Yup. One of my cats is not a fan of getting combed but needs it. We do it in stages and allow her to calm down so she doesn't bite or scratch us.
