That's not unusual behavior in cats. Just avoid the brushing and learn the behavioral cues that indicate agitation

A twitching tail tip and ears back is a very big warning that they are done with the present activity.
Do watch the wound for signs of infection and go to the hospital if the would is inflamed, gets red or becomes hot to the touch. Cat bites can be (but usually aren't) a dangerous source of infection.
I think I've been bitten and/or scratch by every cat and 2 of our three dogs and it's always been my fault for pushing their limits of what they'll tolerate. They are still animals.
